Though the premise may seem out of left field for Simons, a thematic investigation reveals it to be firmly in line with the ethos of his work. “Siddhartha” is an exploration of a youth’s journey away from home, which culminates in him completing a quest to find himself. It rejects materialism, as Simons’ preceding shows had staunchly done. The Buddha reputing his father and the ways of a wealthy, sheltered life to discover himself and the truths of the world is similar to the idea of the development of “I” outside of the pre-adapted norms of one’s society, which Simons repeatedly sympathized with throughout his career.
The most limited pieces from spring 2004 featured hand-done detailing, imbuing a quality of intimacy into the collection not previously seen in Simons’ work. This coat features a blend of hand-written quotes from “Siddhartha” with watercolor detailing throughout. The fabric itself is unique, as it feels like a light Tyvek base, and it sits oversized on the wearer. The bespoke nature of the piece is highly evident, and we suspect that you could count on one hand the number of these produced.
