Vintage Design
This is a rare “Chief” chair or “Höfðingjinginn” by Gunnar Gudmundsson, Iceland, 1960, and made by Kristjani Siggeirson of Reykjavík.
The chair has an oak frame with a saddle leather slung seat and back. The ends of the uprights and seat rails have inlaid block detail.
The design owes much to the constructivist and De Stijl movements and in many ways resembles the early work of Marcel Breuer who also took influence from the movement.
This is a single chair offered here however we do have a second chair which could be listed if a buyer wished to purchase a pair.
The chairs are in amazingly good condition having been removed from a “time capsule” 1950’s property in Hampstead with little sign of use save for slight patination to the leather.
